You
can do something now!
First
step: Contact ADEQ regarding Phelps Dodge's voluntary program.
Second step: Contact the mining management to let them know we
expect
a permanent solution.
Step One: What to say to the Department of Environmental Quality:
I want the pollution problem stopped permanently at the source, not just
temporarily by drilling wells outside the pollution. I want their "remediation"
to come under the supervision of ADEQ. If Phelps Dodge plans to clean
up their mess voluntarily, why should they care if they are regulated
by ADEQ? (Please add any personal experiences.)
Note:
Please write a letter either by traditional mail or e-mail, so that ADEQ
has something in their hands to show Phelps Dodge officials, and hearing
officers, in case Phelps Dodge files an appeal of the Aquifer Protection
Permit. (A grave possibility which we hope to avoid.)

Step Two: What
to say to Phelps Dodge Corporate management: We want a permanent solution
to the pollution of our drinking water. We appreciate and thank you for
the temporary solution of drilling of wells outside the pollution. However,
we don't want you to think that since no one is having to drink hard and
high sulfate water that you do not have to do anything more. It is imperative
that you show good faith in remediating the pollution permanently by coming
under compliance of ADEQ. We do ask that the corporation cooperate by
providing funds to implement a permanent remediation project.
